Two months ago or so I registered for the Ottawa Race Weekend 5k. I am
not a runner in anyone's estimation but I registered for two reasons:
1) a kick in the ass to get me off the couch and back doing something,
anything, that would get me in better shape
2) opportunity to celebrate point 1 with the people I am really doing
all of this for: Amy and the kid.
Regarding point 1, I think I've succeeded. Training didn't go as well
as I'd planned but I'm at the point now where I'm comfortable enough
going out and running / walking a few times a week. More importantly
for me, I've got it into my routine. So I'm more likely to stick with
it.
On point 2...
Amy's suffering from some odd muscle/nerve issue right now. She'll be
fine but she's in some pain and her mobility is limited. No way she's
ready to handle toddler wrangling in a crowd of people.
And point 2 was never about this particular race. I want to celebrate
my new approach to fitness with the people that mean the most. If they
can't be at the finish line, I can wait for the next race.
Ottawa's blessed with an abundance of 5k options. Fall Colours, the
Army Run, the Hintonburg and Barrhaven races... I'll pick another one
and do it up right.
